6 Date Ideas for the Eco-Friendly Couple

Earth Day will be celebrated this year on April 22nd, and people all over the world will work together to educate, spread awareness, and take action to protect our planet. The focus of this year is on:

The unique environmental challenges of our time. As the world’s population migrates to cities, and as the bleak reality of climate change becomes increasingly clear, the need to create sustainable communities is more important than ever. Earth Day 2025 will seek to do just that through its global theme: Green Cities.

If you and your partner are concerned with the Earth and want to take action and hang out at the same time, here are some date ideas for you — the eco-friendly couple.

1. Go plant a tree

Trees and other greens do great things for our environment, and adding green to your city is a great way to spend time together and help the cause of Earth Day. You and your partner can plant trees in your own yard, organize a tree planting event in your area, or you can help build green play areas in your local schoolyard.

2. Build a garden

I am so excited for the weather to start to get better so we can get outside and build up our own garden. Having fresh food in your backyard helps cut down your carbon footprint, and it just seems to taste better when it’s something you grew. Now is a perfect time to start your own garden. Plus, it can be quite romantic — getting your hands dirty and all.

3. Go for a hike

There is something about being with the person you love, out in the fresh air, enjoying gorgeous scenery, and getting your heart rate up that sets the scene for a romantic and happy date. Hiking is eco-friendly because you’re using your own feet to take you places, plus being out in nature will help you become more aware of what your area looks like. Want to up your contribution to Earth Day? Take some gloves and a garbage bag with you on your hike and clean up along the way.

4. Cook at home

One of the tried-and-true date events is going out for dinner. You dress up, drive to the fanciest place in town, and eat until you’re full before driving back home. If you don’t want to give up the romance of eating a meal together, you can still honor Earth Day by cooking at home! Not only can you ensure the food and ingredients are locally sourced, you can go pick them up using public transit or by walking. Cooking at home means you don’t have to drive to and from the restaurant, saving gas.

5. Disconnect and unplug

Everyone is always so connected and attached to their phones that finding time to disconnect and unplug can really be great for a relationship. Earth Day is a great excuse to turn off all the noise from work and pings of social media updates and really be engaged with each other. If your relationship is like mine, unplugging likely has to be scheduled and that in itself can be a romantic date.

6. Volunteer

Volunteering does great things for your environment, your community, and yourself. There’s no reason why it can’t also be the background for a romantic date, and if you’re already an eco-conscious couple, this is a great option for you two. There are so many places you can offer your help and doing good makes everyone happier.
